4/5 stars

very witty & moving account of an amazing woman's life (0/0 people found this helpful)

Even tho Maya Angelou's getting knocked up by a relative stranger @ 16 was not ideal (tho probably was linked with her earlier sexual abuse), she is a very good example of being anti-racist & overcoming prejudices against people of other ethnic groups - an African American marrying a white man was quite a taboo even then - she stands up completely for black and white people struggling against American apartheid, is not cynical about white women marrying black men, & overcomes horrifying discrimination to travel the world. Sadly, I fear that the discrimination and poverty experienced by African Americans has still not disappeared, & - heaven forbid! - Western women of whatever colour will still be chased for their passport in non-western countries, an example of which (being 'stalked' by a Yugoslav) she recounts with good humour.

4/5 stars

A solid middle part of an outstanding woman's life (6/7 people found this helpful)

This book follows on well from the previous books telling of Maya's life. It is in the same style, but telling of her life as a performer in an opera travelling through Europe. There are however a few anomalies - her son's name seems to have been changed from Guy to Clyde, and their relevant ages seem to keep changing. Although this is only a minor point, it did lead me to wonder if it was not such a true account of her life as we are led to believe... However, even if this is not the case, it still shocks, delights, saddens and raises interest in this marvellous woman's life. It will also definitely make you want to buy the next book.
