gripping and sad (0/0 people found this helpful)

yes it tells a true story of bravery and it makes me angry that our government sent such fine brave lads to fight in an illegal war and without giving our soldiers enough of the right protective equipment or vehicles. my close friend came back with one leg gone and has now joined the war veterans for peace.

British pageturner (0/0 people found this helpful)

I bought Sniper one after one of the snipers in the book came to work alongside me. As a member of the team that the book is about, Fitz can confirm the accuracy of the content, once I started it I could not put the book down, a page turner of the highest order.
Dan Mills does not mince words, but unlike many other authors, he talks English, in every way, even the French ones!!! No references to things that only Americans will understand, no over the top love of his country stuff, no soppy romance either, just top of the range action, humour and typical upper ranks interference in what the front line troops should do. And what those troops think of it!
Buy it, and take a day off to read it, you won't want to stop until the end.

Smashing and food for thought (1/1 people found this helpful)

This is a smashing read and account of events going on with little media coverage - I am French but understand that even in the UK the press is not overwhelmed with stories about British soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan.
I found the book very well balanced between life/action report and technical details, the latter being sufficient to support the first instead of invading the foreground.
I suppose Dan Mills and the men around him are of the stuff that bought Britain an empire (Red Coats and all), helped us French understand it was time to stop spreading mayhem all over Europe (Waterloo) and liberated Europe in 44/45.
And still I cannot help feeling upset that soldiers' lives are put at a risk for no clearly identifiable reason and gain with many restrictions as to the amount of force they can employ, be it for tight budgets or because of limited rules of engagement. I have been trained as a platoon leader in the infantry, in the late 80's the motto was still a full head-on confrontation with armies of the Warsaw Pact, meaning heavy metal all the way. One of the many grandeurs of these men is they had to do with being fired at before opening up while not being granted the full firepower of western armies. As observed in the book, it is a miracle that the battle group lost two men only... but the additional few who got severely injured with everlasting consequences must not be forgotten.

Fantastic true account of UK troops under seige (1/1 people found this helpful)

This is the first book i've only read of this genre. It is addictive and amazing.
As normal joe public was going around moaning about the high taxes, Iraq war or the weather, there are soldiers risking their lives, for their country, thanks to the government we voted in. This book brings it all home.

The only down point for me, was that I found out it was written by a ghost writer ( which is OK, as I don't expect squaddies to be great wordsmiths) but that the writer works for THE SUN, and you start seeing plugs for the paper and it's Sister TV station SKY TV. Very annoying!
Full of action, but also thought provoking. - (How do these soldiers fit into society afterwards?).
A book about true Heroes!

Non-stop action with an important insight (0/0 people found this helpful)

I don't usually read war books, let alone one about real events, but this was both entertaining and educational. We switch off from what is going on in Iraq, probably because a fair few of us don't agree that our Armed Forces should be out there. Our soldiers don't have the choice of where to go, saying this, most of the soldiers mentioned in the book were up for the fight. I'm tempted to use some clever word play here, but that would not do justice to the book as it shoots from the shoulder rather than the hip. The pace is fast, the language blunt, the descriptions concise but vivid - you'll never watch war news footage from the Middle East the same way again. Oh yes, and I'm still laughing about the donkey porn and fighting in sandals!
