Reader Reviews:An ethnographic excursion into spirit possession in Africa. (0/0 people found this helpful)With this book Roy Willis has provided the anthropological community and the readership at large with a breathtaking excursion int the realm of 'spirit possession' and the Ngulu cult in Zambian Ulungu, East Central Africa. This is an opportunity to gain an understanding of a little known phenomena as the author describes in great detail his relationship with his three Lungu research assistants and their experiences of the healing powers of the Ngulu doctors, their encounters with sorcery and the revelations associated with the trance states they witnessed in the Ngulu practitioners and their patients. This book is also a journey into the realms beyond the everyday, the home of spirits. This explicitly detailed work can challenge our own beliefs and lead us to question our own modes of understanding. The author is an accomplished anthropologist and author who has the benefits of his own insights and experience as a spiritual healer in his own right. Whilst drawing on the theoretical works of many eminent anthropologists as well as his own substantial body of ethnographic works, the authorshows an unusual depth of insight and understanding whilst taking a metaphorical leap into the abyss of consciousness, that has until now remained uncharted.
