Reader Reviews:

4/5 stars

One of the best in African poetry :) (0/0 people found this helpful)

It is set at a time when some Africans are trying to modernize themselves, during and after colonial times.

The first poem 'Song Of Lawino' (Originally written in Acoli) is a cry by Lawino towards her husband Ocol who has studied at Makerere University and has rejected the ways of his ancestors. Lawino whilst uneducated is still intelligent. She criticizes the white man's ways, sometimes humorously. This includes their dances, food, culture, medicine.

'Song Of Ocol' the second poem is rather a rude reply to Lawino's. Despite being educated Ocol lacks no morals and fails to accept his people for who they are.

This is one of the best in African poetry. I really enjoyed the way Okot has captured the culture.
