A Natural Poet - par excellence (0/0 people found this helpful)

Heine stands as one of Germany's most significant poets. He gives us lyrical poetry par excellence. His poems are simply presented but with a great deal of depth. His range of tone, frequently within the same poem, is impressive. Translating a poet like Heine, with its stress on sound and rhythm, is a Herculean task, but Arndt manages it brilliantly, presenting the poet's work in as near as we are likely to get to their original German structures. His poems have been set to music countless times, most notably by Schumann in his Dichterliebe song set, and there is estimated to be around eight thousand other settings of his verse. Easy to read on the surface, he possesses both deep pathos and a sardonic wit. A complete edition of Heine's poetry by this translator would be unbeatable, but until then this collection fills the gap nicely.
