Editorial Review:

For readers of Gary Rosenzweig's earlier books on Director versions 5 and 6, Special Edition Using Director 7 holds no surprises: it is a big, competent, extensive volume on the latest version of Macromedia's flexible multimedia engine.

The book quickly ploughs through the beginner level material (Director's interface, using cast members, basic controls and animation) in an effort to dig in to the finer points of the entire application: using bitmap art vs vector art, digital video, sound, new paint and layering effects, and more--all this in the first 150 pages.

All the usual chapters are here: getting up to speed on the interface, using Lingo, preparing artwork, etc. but of all the various sections and chapters, Section 8 is arguably the most useful. "Using Director to Create Professional Applications" takes you through six application categories (educational, business, graphics, sound, Shockwave and games) using a variety of real-world examples.

The last section, "Finishing a Project" is also of vital interest. Whole chapters on debugging your application as well as tweaking for maximum performance are critical points when delivering professional level work, and the author draws from his experience and passes on many useful tips.

Special Edition Using Director 7 is probably one of the more useful books on this software, and suitable for beginning, intermediate and somewhat advanced users.--Mike Caputo, Amazon.com

Need to do something in a hurry? Then don't look here! (0/0 people found this helpful)

I've been working on a project using Director 7, so I got this book to help me. And help me it did - helped me to keep warm when I burnt it!

This is one of those really irritating books that says "You *can* do this." rather than "This is how to do it." I spent so long re-reading sections in a vain attempt to find out how to do things that I had to have two haircuts during chapter 7.

Nearly every time I had a question, this book couldn't answer it. Perhaps it could, but after five minutes of looking any sane person gives up!

The only reason I'm writing this review is because the book hacked me off so much I wanted to log on just to give it a panning!

I have got some wonderful computing books, but this is not one of them. If it's a choice between this book and the plague, then avoid the book!

A truly inspiring book, an excellent reference (0/0 people found this helpful)

Anyone familiar with even the very basics of Director will find this book of tremendous value. Apart from the top quality, in-depth coverage of every aspect of Director, this book stands out because it explains the ins and outs and details with absolute clarity while at the same time suggesting innovative and unexpected ways to apply this knowledge. Read it cover to cover or use it as a reference - this book functions equally well, and chances are you will come away not only with answers, but new ideas as well. Brilliant.

Excellent book for experienced and intermediate users (0/0 people found this helpful)

I bought this book expecting yet another in-depth guide to the basics of Director and Lingo - how wrong I was! The book doesn't cover much of the basic stuff at all, instead it gets into the nitty gritty of authoring with Macromedia's package. It includes loads of sections on how to develop specific kinds of applications, a lot on Shockwave, loads on behaviors... the list is endless! If you're a serious Director developer and you need a handy desktop reference, complete with loads of useful tips, examples and code then this is the best of the bunch. Along with the 'in a nutshell' books on Lingo and Director, this is a real winner.
