Its Lebanese.. (0/0 people found this helpful)

Im Lebanese and my arabic isnt the greatest so i bought this book and i have to say that it is very good. Its a great book for beginers and it also explains alot about lebanese culture. the only problem with this book is that it was to simple for me (as i already know alot of lebanese arabic)and it only focuses on trying to speak arabic, not read or write it.. otherwise very good book for beginers especailly if you decide to visite to lebanon.

great disappointment (3/4 people found this helpful)

1. I found the explanations re grammar/syntax very confusing - even though I am a professional linguist - and at times misleading. 2. Much of the vocabulary is needlessly repeated in various lists here and there throughout the book. 3. The approx 60-minute cassette was completely blank apart from the first minute or so. Conclusion: all in all, a great disappointment, as good reliable books on spoken Levantine Arabic seem to be few and far between. Perhaps it would prove useful to someone who already speaks Lebanese and wishes to acquire more vocabulary.

An excellent book that lives up to its claims (5/5 people found this helpful)

Being married to a Lebanese woman and, consequently, having lived in a Lebanese family for the past 8 years, I was constantly frustrated by being left out of discussions and feeling "in the dark" because of the language barrier. I had tried many different self-study books to learn "Arabic", but soon found out that learning MSA (Modern Standard Arabic) is totally useless in a family context, as no one actually Speaks MSA at home. I also found that most of these methods presented the material in a manner that seemed illogical or confusing to me as an 'Occidental' although I'm sure that to the Middle Eastern mind, it was probably a very logical order of presentation. I've been searching for years for a method that would help me learn the Arabic spoken by Lebanese in every day life. The material is presented in a format that should be familiar to non-Arabs who have studied a foreign language in High-School or University. The author has selected very useful vocabulary and expressions which will make communication possible in the most commonly occuring situations in a family context, as opposed to some books which focus only on checking into hotels, site seeing and other "touristy" things. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to be able to use Lebanese Arabic in everyday life situations. Many thanks to Dr. Feghali for writing this book.
