Reader Reviews:

4/5 stars

Excellent read, good realistic action (1/1 people found this helpful)

I've just started going through his series and after having read "The one that got away", i did not think that this book would be able to beat the storyline. Wrong! Excellent storyline, a bit slow at the beginning, but then on i found it difficult to put it down as the action flowed and just got better and better. It made me think as to if this is a true story due to the realism in the writing. But, when i thought i had read it all; the ending threw me completely. What a great twist! Worth every penny.

A good read but drags on a bit (0/0 people found this helpful)

I did enjoy this book because of how realistic everything is. Ryan describes in great detail an adventure that could actually happen. The only problem i have is that in the first half of the book, there's half a dozen sidekick characters that, just as you start to get to know them, Ryan abandons and brings in a fresh batch to replace. With this going on i can't feel attached to any of the characters apart from Sharp and Tony.
Overall i would recommend to all those who want to learn about the sort of jobs the SAS pull off.

A good story, well told (0/2 people found this helpful)

A good story, but I do get a bit fed up with all the `family' stuff that I presume the editor told the author to include in an attempt to make his characters more believable. My personal view is that an action thriller should be a thriller with lots of action, and I have not the slightest interest in the hero's dysfunctional relationship with his wife and family - these bits I always skim over, as I suspect do a lot of other readers. That said, it rolls along quite nicely, and he does tell a good story.

'Stand By, Stand By' By Chris Ryan (1/1 people found this helpful)

A fantastic read.

From the very start Chris Ryan has written in such a way that the reader, (what ever age between 10 - 40+), is gripped from the very start of the book. Good desciption and literacy methods help to create vivid and intresting pictures of images.

I guess one of the most shocking, or realistic views i had was that this was really happening somewhere out in the world, and Ryan has portrayed this excellently throughout. The 'nitty-gritty' of missions and figures is provided in ways in which the reader is not bored, but interactive with the imformation.

Obviously a lot of research has gone in to all of his books, but if you think about it, this man has been there, and done it. I think he has done the world a favour by writing these books, it really opens up the imagination of many people when read, and that is what good author does in their stride.

I think the plot was fantastic. It was full of twists and turns keeping the reader intranced in the story-line. Geordie Sharp is a great character, and not really stock or stereo-typed at all. The best part was that the action never stopped. There was always something going on, so the reader never got tired.

So, all in all a fantastic book. I couldn't put it down.
I reccommend the book to anyone, and if you've read this one, defiently read the sequel; "Zero Option" - (which is even better)!

I hope this review helped.

really good! (2/3 people found this helpful)

Fantastic book. I have Chris Ryan's entire works and this is one of his better. One of the books i read again.
"Paul Dixon": the sequel is called Zero Option and is even better than Stand By, Stand By. Both books hold seven stars in my opinion.
