Reader Reviews:A great read, especially for those staring out in the sport! (6/6 people found this helpful)This is a great book. It covers a wide range of topics, from technique to terminology. It is excellent for beginners, and for brushing up on that all-important technique! It also contains a great section on race preparation, including mental conditioning and diet etc. Steve takes us through all the important rowing essentials step by step, which makes the book very reader friendly. It is definitely worth buying if you want a wide overview of rowing! Those who have been in the sport for a long time, may need something with a little more depth. Still it's a great reference tool for all rowers and coxes! Wide-ranging, but not the best rowing text (6/6 people found this helpful)Tries to cover a large range of topics, so that none are perhaps covered to a really suitable depth. The sections on technique, fitness and training suffer a bit as a result I feel. Not a bad text at all, but I would far recommend John MacArthur's "High Performance Rowing" over this for material on technique, fitness and improving both. Extremely informative read and a very useful companion. (3/3 people found this helpful)This book is without doubt the next best thing to a coach. The author is very precise in his way of communicating with the reader. He shows great all round knowledge in every subject he tackles. An excellent resource to any rower be they complete beginner or blossoming professional. At the end of the day he is speaking as someone who has one 4 Olympic Golds and 8 World Golds, so he can't be far from the truth can he? My only criticism of this book is that a proper updated version of the book is'nt yet available as some of the rules of racing have changed fundamentally in the last year or so.
