Not Convinced... (0/0 people found this helpful)

I have read many books over my last fifty or so years, and these have covered many genre's. For me the essence of thriller - adventure - action & suspense. Is the ability of the author to convince the reader that he/she is right there in the thick of it all. That is true escapism. and, requires immense trade craft. I personnally do not think that 'Strike Back' delivers this. Although the plot is simple, it is however well structured. While writing this review, I would like to recommend a fine example of Thriller writing. 'The Constantine Legacy' by Andrew Towning.

Simple but still good. (1/1 people found this helpful)

Ok This was a very very simple plot line. Bad Guys take a hostage, Hostage gets rescued by good guy (Ex-SAS drunk comes good) with a simplistic twist in the tail.
There's nothing particularly clever about the story .... OK BUT it is very well written, easy reading, compelling and a good solid read. I'd recommend this for anyone who wants a book for the train or airport. The time will fly and the story will leave you satisfied. it's also a good read for anyone just getting into these kind of stories or youngsters in the 10-16 bracket.
Don't disregard this book.... if you like the whole Andy McNab/Chris Ryan/SAS kind of reads then by all means give it a go.

Halt! Do not buy this book! (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is probably the worst 'ex-SAS' action novel I've ever read. I can only imagine that Ryan didn't bother to even cast an eye over the twaddle his publisher-appointed ghost writer produced. The entire sequence of events is totally implausible, and the usual sprinkling of military procedure and jargon is conspicuously absent. Whoever wrote this book has never spent a day in the military - and has missed the whole secret of delivering armchair escapism. Come on...when the range instructor 'tosses' him an AK47, or when he turns around and finds himself pointing the weapon at the instructor, I had to gag on the lack of effort put into relaying a professional military environment and training. Not to mention the gratuitous sex scenes! It's a shame - there was some mileage in the 'Chris Ryan' brand yet, but they've blown it. I won't be buying another. I hope he's made his fill.

Very, very poor effort indeed. (0/0 people found this helpful)

My first Chris Ryan, and it will be my last. Apparently written by an unexceptional ten year old - at least that's what the writing style suggests - this book has it all: Utterly cliched characters; an old and extremely over-used story formula; factual errors; repititions; inconsistencies; repetitions etc etc etc.
Just one example of many: On page 181, Ryan writes that Porter (the 'hero') is blindfolded by his Hezbollah host on the journey to their hideout, but then, only two paragraphs later, without any suggestion that our 'hero' has had this blindfold removed, he begins to describe, in some detail, what he can see as they arrive at their destination! Very poor writing and attention to detail, plus - does noone proof-read or edit this nonsense?
The only good thing I can say about this book, is that there is apparently a market for rubbish novels written by semi-literate ex-military types, so I may well flash up the word processor in the hope of cashing in myself!

Srike Back (0/1 people found this helpful)

Having bought this novel on a whim at a book signing by Chris Ryan, without knowing anything about the author or his works, apart from a brief write-up in my local paper advertising the book signing.
I starting reading the prologue and found that I could not put the book down until it was finished. It was one of the best books that I have read in a long time, becoming totaly absorbed into Chris Ryan's world.
It might not suit readers looking for clever plots and mind bending twists, but if its an easy escape into a world of adrenalin fuelled excitement your after look no further.
