Reader Reviews:Lovely book, elegant costumes, glamorous era (6/7 people found this helpful)In addition to buying the book I also visited the V&A exhibit of Queen Maud's dresses. The first impression is, of course, of the glamour and richness of the Queen's wardrobe and of her excellent taste. Every single dress is meticulous in its design and decoration but what's more, every dress is supremely elegant and made to the highest standard. The Queen seems to have been a conservative in her dress and insisted on femininity and consistency in her appearance (there is only one trouser suit - for skiing, and all of the shoes have a similar toe shape and heel height). Detail is important and the book shows that, too - the intricate gold embroidery on tulle and the excellent craftsmanship. We get a glimpse into the Queen's life - she had to change at least four times a day and packed 60 suitcases for some trips. These dresses are, in fact, a national treasure, not merely personal belongings, and they fulfilled the function of presenting the queen as a public figure. The book is also useful as an overview of the designers of the era - it seems that the Queen liked employing a variety of them - from Worth to Poiret. Excellent book. A lovely tribute to Norway's first Queen of modern times (59/61 people found this helpful)The Kingdom of Norway is this year 100 years old or more precise the kingdom of Norway of modern times. Norway's first Queen was the English Princess Maud. This lovely book deals with Queen Maud's wardrobe. The pictures are really good and the choice of dresses etc. shown is really nice, especially the formal and evening gowns. The Queen had excellent taste, the only one of Queen Alexandra's daughters who could match her mother's superb style. The book and the exhibition at the V & A is a befitting tribute to this largely forgotten Queen and Princess.
