You won't go back to ordinary Sudoku! (2/2 people found this helpful)

Like most addicts, I have bought a wide range of Sudoku books. However, having experienced the additional dimension of the Sudoku X format all the others now seems less interesting. I thoroughly recommend this book but, beware, there are only a few books in this format currently available.

Another twist on the Sudoku format (4/4 people found this helpful)

This book contains 100 puzzles in the Sudoku X format - with this puzzle variation, the long diagonals also contain one of all the base numbers. The puzzles range from 6 by 6 to 9 by 9.

I believe the Sudoku formula does need constant variations and developing or, in my opinion, the puzzle risks quickly losing a lot of the huge interest which currently encompasses it. I applaud the 12 by 12 and 16 by 16 etc formats and this is certainly another very good invention indeed.

Bringing the diagonals into play does bring in another dimension to the problem solving and also, apparently because there are a factor of 250 fewer 'legal' sudoku positions, it enables the puzzle setter to set up a valid position with only one solution by giving fewer starting numbers. Both of these factors increase the interest in the puzzle solving.

Another new invention introduced by this particular book is the 'Stepping Stones' chapter. In this the author provides an indication as to which order the squares can be solved without giving the actual number in the square. This concentrates the puzzler on a particular problem area and enables him to discover some solving techniques for himself. This is a brilliant idea which I would like to see copied in other Sudoku puzzle books.

I recommend this book to Sudoku enthusiasts looking for an extra interesting twist to the problems.
