Editorial Review:"Wine Gurus"--dreadful things. There you were, enjoying homemade paté on crusty bread with a bottle of Sainsbury's best, and along came Mr Guru and told you it only rated a six out of 20. How refreshing therefore to find Mr Gluck suggesting that there is such a thing as good quality, inexpensive wine which you can enjoy with a pizza in front of the TV or with your turkey on Christmas Day-- and that you can buy it in a supermarket. Superplonk is a Boy's (and Girl's) Own Annual for grown-ups. Here we have a book which costs much the same as a moderate bottle of supermarket wine but guides you through the myriad choices which are now available alongside baked beans and DIY curries. He doesn't always claim to get it bang on--a thoughtful introduction explains that any given bottle will be at the mercy of the food and company with which it is served--but he is an ardent drinker who believes that enjoyment can be had from the simplest of wines as long as they are sensibly priced, well made and quaffable. The vast majority of his recommendations are priced at under £5. The shops are all the major supermarket chains (Streetplonk deals with High Street wine shops). The comments are broad and straightforward. A great trolley-filler. --Nick Tarayan Reader Reviews:Take the guesswork out of the wine aisle lottery (0/0 people found this helpful)Best fiver I've spent in ages. I used to hate visiting the supermarket with my wife until I was given the '98 edition for my birthday. Now I'll happily accompany her, so long as she leaves me in the wine aisle with my latest copy and a couple of empty 6-bottle wine carriers. I'm bound to fill them by the time she returns with a trolley-load of other, less important groceries. Gluck has pointed me to some great wines, all at well under a fiver; and also stopped me from buying some mediocre brews which looked impressive. I think I'll have to buy the next edition of the book by the case to give as Christmas presents! CategoriesAmazon.co.uk places this book into the following categories:
