Pathetic and disappointing, good book cover though (0/0 people found this helpful)

I have to admit I was really disappointed with this book, the series I loved and got on DVD as soon as it came out.

Fortunately for me this book was another charity shop purchase for less than two quid or I would have seriously thought about going back to the bookshop and demanding a refund.

Considering this book is supposed to reflect a ten part series with LOADS of characters, their lives and times from the 1950s, this book does not even SCRATCH the surface, in fact it stops dead at crucial points which explain everything about why Allie was so important not only to the Aliens but to humanity too.

Another bone of contention for me is the ending in the book; it ends so abruptly, you are left looking at the last page and thinking, “Eh? Isn’t there supposed to more?” We all remember how Allie had to leave earth, that she wanted to stay with her parents Lisa and Charlie but humanity was not ready for someone like her and she would be safer with her alien relatives but in the book, we don’t EVEN get a taster of this, one minute she is talking to her mom, the next….well there is no next minute, that is my point!

I was so frustrated with this book, and the only reason it is getting two stars is the cover art is really nice and the blurb on the back reads quite well, shame about the rest of the book though.

This book’s contents is not worth the paper it is written on, which is a real shame because it could have been a cracking good read given an author who knew what he was doing, obviously Mr Cook didn’t know what he was doing and thus spoilt it all for readers across the globe!

Far cry from Spielberg's TV series (4/5 people found this helpful)

This book does not do justice to the excellent TV series. I had hope to relive some of the scenes through the book but so many scenes were excluded! It reads like a script except that it lacked continuity and is stripped of all emotions. I think I will find difficulty in understanding what's going on if I haven't watched the TV series. The narrative made it one of the worst books I've ever read.

Disappointing compared to the TV series (7/7 people found this helpful)

I bought this book halfway through the tv series, and had to read to the end to find out what happened. But having done that and then watched the rest of the series, I was very disappointed with the way the book handled the story.
While it mostly sticks very close to the tv plot, there are parts missed out and other parts inexplicably changed. As a summary and reminder of what has happened so far, the book is okay, but that's about as far as it goes. Such a pity, when other novelisations have gone so much further than the TV series/film involved. This book could have been so much more, but we found it sadly lacking.

Taken for a ride (9/10 people found this helpful)

A very poor novelisation of a very good TV mini-series. It's obviously based on the script before it was filmed, and scenes are further merged and condensed to the point where there are continuity errors and missing vital scenes. It misses out some of the best bits! No characterisation, no atmosphere, no insight, just a skeleton of the story that pares a 15 hour mini-series down to 300 pages - a huge mistake.

seenit read it (7/14 people found this helpful)

I have promised myself that I will only read up to where the series is and it is working . The serial is is more detail but the book is a good read for highlighting what has happened so far
Great temptation to read on though and can not put the book down
