All the varied pieces in this volume share Pushkin's verve and light touch. There isn't one of them that isn't fascinating and highly enjoyable - none have the feeling of having been translated just to fill in the gaps around Penguin's 'Queen of Spades' volume. The introduction by John Bayley is thorough and really brings out the qualities of the writing as well as setting each of them in context. The notes are informative. All that's missing is a map for the 'Journey to Arzrum'.
