I must disagree with the above review. I have found this book very useful in first weaning you into the very intimidating Arabic script and the accompanying cd is very good for teaching you the pronunciation of all the Arabic sounds. The progression through the chapters is very logical and there is plenty of opportunity for you to read parts of the Arabic script without the transliteration. All in all this a very useful and comprehensive book, especially good at covering potential stumbling blocks in the language. The only weaknesses are that verb tables are introduced too late and the dictionary at the end is to be frank, pathetic. However, invest in a good two-way dictionary and this won't be a problem.

If you just want to learn a few phrases this book is OK and the contexts of the conversations are good.
If you really want to learn Arabic it shouldn't be your main source. I wouldn't dream of teaching an Arabic speaker about English without teaching them ABC. As the book is transliterated into our alphabet as you progress I found the transliteration confusing. I started again and learnt to read and write Arabic and now find it easier to recognise words and say them. In the long run the transliteration becomes a stumbling block and it is hard to progress. However in the short term its ok.
