Reader Reviews:Nightmare, it did not help me at all! (5/8 people found this helpful)I'm a student on an MSc. Computer Science, and I originally bought this book, as it was suggested to me at uni... In fact this was my first VB .net book! I found it too theoretical, boring, broken down into far too many sections, and for all the introductory part(arrays, loops etc) the examples are all console based solutions rather than web or windows solutions, and they're self contained....which is not very useful, when 99% of professionals or students, need to get going fast and start building immediately programs seeing the interactions of different elements...The beauty of VB .net is to be able to build forms fast....what is the point in spending half of the book talking about console applications?? I quite frankly got "Beginning VB .net", and got on perfectly, much clearer, much better 21 days? (3/3 people found this helpful)Firstly I should explain that when I bought the book I was pretty much a total beginner to programming. This is a well thought out, book that is clearly presented and explains everything you need to know in good detail. There are walk through examples for each topic these are quite simple and easy to follow, which results in progressing along quite quickly. At the end of the chapters/days are additional exercises testing the understanding of the information covered in the chapter, for someone like me these were very challenging, perhaps too much so in some cases but on the plus side if you can do them then you know things are going well. The idea of learning VB.net in 21 days from this book is perhaps ambitious, well for a beginner who only has free time in the evenings at least. There is a lot of information to take in and quite a bit of reading between the examples, to fully grasp it I did have to re-read some of the topics again which lengthened the time it took to get through the book. On the negative side the only thing that I could find to the book is that in a couple of the examples there was some minor mistakes, which left me scratching my head for a bit but on the plus side in figuring out it out my understanding of the programming improved. Other than this maybe a DVD or something would be nice, I know they have forums but I never really used these. If there was 4.5 stars I probably would have gone for that but as there is not it must be 4 stars. Good... (1/9 people found this helpful)This book is very good for those new to VB.NET but it doesn't really cover everything. Although it's easy to follow, it doesn't really explain enough. Brilliant!!!!!! (34/36 people found this helpful)Quite simply, this book is brilliant. It starts off basic enough for anyone, introducing all the windows and toolbars in visual basic, then goes onto absolutely every subject you could think of. By the time you finish you will be a pro! There is an extensive amount of sample code that can be downloaded for this book from the Sams Publishing website which is a great help in the learning process. The only thing i would say is that the bit in the title that says "in 21 days" may be a bit ambitious if your a complete novice like me, it's probably do able but definetly takes a lot of time and hard work but the results are surely worth it. Visual Basic.Net (42/43 people found this helpful)If you want to be up and running with VB.Net in no time this is the book for you. It covers all aspects from the basics right up to web and databases applications. Each chapter is well laid out so it is easily digestable and understandable, each chapter finishes with a workshop so you can test youself as you go along. This book is ideal for anyone who is new to the subject, new to prgramming or even anyone who users VB.Net day to day as a reference guide.
