R Karlos Nakai et al have written a book that has encouraged me to develop further my interest in the Native American flute. Gripped by a sudden urge to play, I wanted to learn more about the instrument I had just bought. The book makes clear from the beginning that it is not always easy to play, but rather than discouraging you it draws you in and encourages you to find a way to get to grips with the instrument and its ways. Some of the technical detail may be a bit off putting at first for those who have forgotten their basic music lessons. But take the authors' advice and go to chapter six to find that things are not as complicated as they first appear. Beautifully (and economically) written and laid out, the book moves from the history and cultural context of the flute and its construction and care through to an interesting discussion about the problems of defining authentic Native American culture. The only disappointment was the amount of space dedicated to a discussion of the recordings of Nakai. This, for me, is a separate subject and did not quite match my expectations of the book, which I anticipated would be about the instrument only. But that is a small point. The book was well worth buying because of the authors' ability to draw the reader into their love of the flute and its potential. I am sure that it will continue to develop as a useful study tool for me.
