A fabulous book. (1/1 people found this helpful)

I loved this book. It was a great story & the characters were really well drawn. There are sad moments & funny moments. Sometimes you are really willing for things to go right for the right people, which shows how sympathetic the characters are. I also loved the little illustrations that appear at the beginning of each chapter. I really like the way Ms Owens has a building 'the ballroom' at the centre of people's lives. This is often the case in real life. It's also really nice to have a variety of characters here. The sisters parents are fantastic characters, the Mum with her many ornaments & the Dad who loves his refuge, the garden shed. I also loved Shirley, the Morrissey fan.

A great, uplifting read! (12/14 people found this helpful)

This is a lovely book, really easy to read - one to cosy up with and read with a cup of tea and some chocolate!
It's an even better book than the Tea House on Mulberry Street with the story of two sisters forming a coherent core for the book. Any girl with a sister will identify with the relationship of these two and their attempts to understand themselves and find their destiny in love and life, while the supporting characters, even the "villans" are sympathetic. Although the novel doesn't avoid the harsher things in life, the overall world view is positive and uplifting.
It's great to read a book set in Belfast that's about people's lives, not about the Troubles.
I fully reccommend this to any woman of any age, but particularly if you remember the eighties with fondness! You won't be able to put it down.
