Editorial Review:Mairi Hedderwick's Katie Morag is one of those characters that makes you yearn for simpler times, away from the rush and anxieties of everyday life. Katie Morag lives on the Isle of Struay, off mainland Scotland, in a tightknit community made up of family and friends who live and work side by side in relative harmony. The Big Katie Morag Storybook brings together a collection of stories, rhymes and pictures about Katie Morag's life on the Island, illustrated with whimsical, classic illustrations that add a divine touch of nostalgia to the tales. Katie Morag will appeal to children who enjoy soft, lyrical storytelling set in a time and place that, although ultimately contemporary, could actually be anywhere their imaginations care to take them and adults will relish the simplicity of the stories and illustrations which hark back to times gone by. (Ages 5 and over)--Susan Harrison Reader Reviews:Great for Year 2! (28/28 people found this helpful)I bought this book to support the 'Island home' topic in Year 2. I showed it to my class and they loved the stories, poems and recipes. I would recommend this to Year 2 teachers. A taste of Scotland (7/8 people found this helpful)I love reading Katie Morag to my son, hoping that although he is growing up in England he knows all about life north of the border where mummy grew up. The characters in the book are hilarious and the scrapes Katie Morag gets into always entertaining. Katie Morag as a character gets 5 stars in our house, the only criticism of this book is that the long stories are padded out with bits and bobs that we tend to skip over. Beautifully illustrated tales of a Scottish Isle (4/6 people found this helpful)Katie Morag's life on the Scottish Isle of Struay is the basis of this book. The joy of this book and others about Katie Morag, is the account of a life which is set in a landscape so different to the city , yet which still relates to the same kind of issues children face everywhere. The illustrations are just great, and get better with every read - there's so much to see on the Isle of Struay. I love the way Katie Morag's mum is invariable furious with something, and the competitive grandmas! A lovely book with wonderful illustrations (7/7 people found this helpful)This is a charming book with beautiful illustrations of the fictional Isle of Struay. There is a wonderful map of the island, a family tree for Katie Morag, songs and stories. My children were charmed and are now completely hooked. The illustrations really make the book. It is good value for money.
