Reader Reviews:Pure escapism and full of romance and sacrifice (8/8 people found this helpful)This book is my favourite one so far. I have read all but two of Emma Blair's superbly well written novels and this one has it all. It traces three generation of women from the horrors and losses of the first world war to the pain of serious illness and the value of family. The story starts off in Scotland as so many of Emma Blair's books do with Cathy, a young factory girl smitten with the one true love of her life, Bobby. Together they struggle through the horrors of the first world war. Emma Blair writes with such passion and such intricate detail of her characters that you very soon get to know them, love them and feel with them. You accompany Cathy through her pregnancy with Hannah her daughter and go through a very personal crisis with Hannah and her family. The last of the generation is Robyn, a young independent woman who makes sacrifices for what she wants. Holding them all together is the Blackbird Bookshop where Cathy first worked all those years ago when the story began. The peaceful and perfect ending is superb and doesn't fail to have me in tears every time. If you are new to the books of Emma Blair, I urge you to read 'The Blackbird's Tale' first as you will be rushing out to buy another one by this talented author.
