Editorial Review:The Colour of Magic is Terry Pratchett's maiden voyage through the bizarre land of Discworld. His entertaining and witty series has grown to more than 20 books, and this is where it all starts--with the tourist Twoflower and his hapless wizard guide, Rincewind ("All wizards get like that... it's the quicksilver fumes. Rots their brains. Mushrooms, too."). Pratchett spoofs fantasy clichés--and everything else he can think of--while marshalling a profusion of characters through a madcap adventure. The Colour of Magic is followed by The Light Fantastic. --Blaise Selby, Amazon.com Reader Reviews:What a Beginning to the Series (1/1 people found this helpful)Terry Pratchett has become one of the most popular authors alive today and his popularity is richly deserved. But not even with his fertile mind could ever have envisaged the heights to which his Discworld series would rise. This book first published in 1982 is the start of the Discworld novels and to a degree it is amazing that these books have achieved such popularity.
The writer of magic (1/1 people found this helpful)After 20 or so books any reader of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels are the stuff of legend. If you disagree with this you will have probably stopped reading already, don't let me keep you. This first outing with Rincewind the wizard outlines and exemplifies most of the books to come. Both practicable philosophy and irreverant toilet humour are satisfyingly present. Whilst shadowing familiar elements of our world (tourism specifically in this case), Pratchett also manages to create a world entirely ridiculous yet logical for the reader. Like Rincewind, every reader has the potential to be both coward and hero, but it is always chance that makes the decision which. By the way, it's a bloody good book too. Oh Dear!!! (3/21 people found this helpful)When i started to get 'into' reading at school, i was always being encouraged to read Pratchett by fellow classmates. Amazing they would cry, you must read him!
4 and a half (4/7 people found this helpful)at the start i found the book quite hard going but as i got into it i found it really good. Terry Pratchett has a wonderfull imagination and a good sense of humor. i have just bought the second in the series and recomend this book to anyone whose looking for something with an adventure/comedy plot. The start of an era! (8/11 people found this helpful)I did not read these books in chronological order and came to the colour of magic maybe third or fourth. After reading i was slightly disapointed only ever so slightly thought! This book is the one thst started it all so respect due, but of course it isnt as developed as his later instalments so i do not really suggest this book as the first "Discworld read" because many people may be put off. Still a decent little story full of humour and adventure a good read for someone already a fan of the series but if your new i suggest probably soul music or something.
