Reader Reviews:A must-have for any Phan (6/6 people found this helpful)I had heard about this book before, and every review of it that I had read was good. I recently found a copy in my local library, and I was pleasantly surprised. The author has obviously done his research. This book begins by providing a very VERY detailed description of the Paris Opera House, with some excellent photos to accompany it. It then progresses to give a background of Leroux and how he came to right what must be one of the most phamous tales of all time, and then describes the book. Again, the pictures that go with it are amazing, from oil paintings by American artist Robert Heindel to a photograph of the actual underground lake, where the Phantom supposedly made his home. Perry then goes on to give an informative account of how the Chaney philm that brought the book into phame came about and was made, and, after studying subsequent (but less faithful) philms, he finally goes on to the Lloyd Webber Musical. The wonderful part about this is that it includes some interesting photographs (such as one showing how the Phantom's hideous make-up is produced), and the entire libretto of the show. I'm slightly disappointed that there was not much detail into how Lloyd Webber made his smash hit, but it did give some valuable information of how Maria Bjornson created the sets and costumes. Overall - this has got to be a definite addition to any Phantom library, and is also a wonderful introduction to people who are unfamilar with the show and/or tale. For fans of the show, this is a must... (4/4 people found this helpful)This book looks at almost all of the incarnations of Phantom of the Opera: from the films of Universal Studios in the 20's to the Andrew Lloyd-Webber version upon which it concentrates. For anybody who loves this musical and wants to know more, this is a must, and all devoted phans should have a copy. With detailed close-up photographs of the London first-night cast (Michael Crawford, Steve Barton, Sarah Brightman et al) to the scenery to a full libretto there is very little that this book doesn't cover. Most enjoyable! Similar ProductsPhantom of the Opera, The CategoriesAmazon.co.uk places this book into the following categories:
