This was a thoroughly well-written and satisfying read, with a clever twist at almost each turn of the page. We gave it to our daughter, who said that she enjoyed the read and would fully recommend Sarah Rayne's book and looks forward to reading other offerings by the same author.

Not Quite To Die For (0/0 people found this helpful)

Calvary Jail stands alone on a Cumbrian hillside, it's history of prisoners and
execution chamber haunting the now disused building.

Georgina Grey's family history is all tied up in it's gruesome past, and combining
with TV presenter Chad Ingram, they delve back into Calvary's horrendous history.

An intriguing mystery that constantly pops up with little surprises, DEATH CHAMBER
is a satisfying read, not quite the show stopper, if you know what I mean.

An excellent story with lots of inter-related characters, all very well described. An all round good read, I found it very difficult to put down.

UNPUTDOWNABLE (0/1 people found this helpful)

Sarah Rayne's books are unfailingly compelling and The Death Chamber will have you hooked from the first page. It's an extraordinary tale with, at the heart, an astonishing experiment, conducted in a condemned cell during the time of WWl. That experiment affected people for years afterwards - including the diffident young Walter Kane who came to Calvary Gaol as prison doctor in the 1930s, fighting his own memories of what once happened there.
The plot belts along and the tension is held to the end. Rayne pulls the reader deep into the world she has created, so that you almost start to believe you're actually there inside the spooky darkness of the now-disused gaol.
The characters are believable and real - so much so that you want to meet them and talk to them. There's humour and warmth in them all - from the formidable Clara Caradoc eagerly attending séances in the 1920s, to the present-day with Walter Kane's great-granddaughter tracing his life story, and a TV presenter and his team enthusiastically exploring the gaol for a TV programme on haunted buildings. Thoroughly enjoyable, don't miss this one.

Grrrrreat !!!!! (1/2 people found this helpful)

CREEPY AND ATMOSPHERIC AND AN ABSOLUTE PAGE-TURNER
This is a gripping and really unusual story, set over three time-frames,
in and around the eerie Calvary Gaol and its abandoned execution cell.
The plot focusses on the present-day with intriguing flashbacks to the
1930s when an infamous serial killer shocked the country - and then
takes the reader back even further to the days and the plots of World
War One.
As the story unfolds, the links are revealed tantalisingly and
skilfully, and it becomes apparent that the past is strongly affecting
the present.
I loved the pace and the plotting of this book and I hugely enjoyed the
vividly-drawn characters - the incorrigible Irishman Nicholas O'Kane,
and the darkly charming Neville Fremlin who murdered ladies who fell in
love with him purely for their money. And I also have to praise the
lively scenes in which the present-day TV crew ghost-hunt in the gaol's
deserted death cell - anyone who ever watched 'Most Haunted' will find
that part of the book absolutely compelling.
An absolute must-read! - but be warned that you may want to leave the
light on for some chapters!
