This book is a paper dump of a chunk of the Web version of the FreeBSD handbook. It covers what most people need to know about installing, building and configuring a desktop FreeBSD system. It's especially handy when you've got an installation or configuration problem and you haven't got handy access to the www from another computer (i.e. you're trying to install FreeBSD on your only computer).
Highlight for me included:
- How to install the OS, even allowing it to co-exist with MS operating systems (including a lucid description of BIOS logical drives and how they're invisible to FreeBSD)
- How to use the ports collection
- How to set up an X-Server (which is essential for new users with even slightly off the wall graphics hardware)
- How to run Linux binaries
- A chapter on basic Unixy things like shutting down, managing users, consoles and shells
It won't help you if you have a networking problem (that's going to be in vol. 2) but overall if you're using FreeBSD and don't have another source of information (e.g. Greg Lahey's book) you could do with a copy of this book, even if it's on the off chance you're going to be stuck without www access.
