Reader Reviews:not easy light reading, but a fantastic study. (1/4 people found this helpful)It's not an easy book to read, but you really must not let that put you off. As a first year anthropology student, i tried this book a few times and gave up in despair. Now, as a second year, although i still find this book tough going, it is absolutely worth every minute as it is one of the most insightful anthropology books i have read. In this book Dr Strathern argues how we must understand cultures (i dare not use the word society!) with different economic systems in their own terms, how they have different values and visions, showing how frequently, for example, those with gift economies will have a different view of the concept of the person to the one we have, seeing persons situated between bodies, not grafted immediately on top as the discreete entity we have come to experience.
