Good book (0/0 people found this helpful)

My auntie bought me this book and I liked the ending best of all and the beginning. I liked Fantastic Mr Fox better than this book but they are both great for younger readers. From Oscar, aged 7.

Plot: When Billy finds an old shop for sale he decides to buy it. He thinks of making it into a sweet shop but instead he turns it into a window cleaners' shop because in it lives three animals - one tall, one with a big beak and one who can swing very well. The strange thing is he doesn't have a bucket, a ladder and someone to help him clean; oh no, he has a giraffe, a pelican and a monkey! Billy has some wacky adventures with three amazing animal pals (and some perplexing problems too)...

Amazing fact: Roald Dahl had always dreamed of having his very own sweet shop - just like Billy in this story.

Rating and recommendation: 7/ 10; to all Roald Dahl fans.

There once was aboy called Billy... (0/0 people found this helpful)

There once was a boy called Billy. One day he decided to go and see the old building that used to be a sweetshop. When he arrived at the old building he noticed a sigh saying `sold'. Suddenly, an old bath, rocking horse, sink and an empty canary cage came flying out of one of the windows! Billy looked to see what was there. He saw a beautifully patterned giraffe sticking its head out of one of the windows! Suddenly, he noticed a pelican with a fascinating beak and a monkey as thin as a skeleton. Then suddenly the monkey pointed to the pelican and said she is called Pelly then the monkey pointed to the giraffe and said she is called Giraffe.
Suddenly Giraffe said to Pelly please may you carry that boy up to me. The Pelly flew up to the giraffe. They said their job was to clean windows. Then the phone rang. The person on the phone said that he needs 677 dirty windows to clean .They set off and they asked if Billy wanted to clean windows with them. When the got there they saw a man and another man fighting we picked some cherries there was a burglar. The burglar stole the wife's jewels because Billy picked the cherries he opened his own sweet shop. I liked this book because it was funny.

ingenious (0/0 people found this helpful)

Maybe i live a sheltered life but this has to be one of the best kid's books ever written. I wonder whether Mr. Dahl was a madman or a genious. I got this for my 4 year old and as much as he enjoyed it, I think the real treat was for me the mum. This book must have passed me by when i was a child but I shall make sure I recommend it to all of my friends (and their children of course).

Fantastic yet practical (0/0 people found this helpful)

While Roald Dahl is already a well-known figure in the world of children's books, I have to say 'The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me' is the book I enjoyed most - for reading for myself, and also for reading to the young ones. Roald Dahl's characters are brimming with wonderful songs, and the plot and the characters, fantastic as usual, has practical, down-to-earth elements that makes the feel like a story that could have happened, if one felt like believing it.

Another factor that makes this book so absolutely enjoyable is that there are no detestable adults, obnoxious characters or unbearably suspense-filled cliffhangers which makes it a easy read for the children as well.
