Reader Reviews:

4/5 stars

Open-mindedness required. (1/1 people found this helpful)

I do not wish to review this book in the traditional sense as, ultimately, personal views can taint the angle and tone of the review - so I will not be discussing the books actual content. I do say this however - whether you are religious or not it is certainly worth A PROPER READ! It would seem that half the negative reviews on here are from people who have (at best) skimmed through a few points then attacked them as though their lives depended on it (which if you believe in the after life may actually be close to the truth!) - I simply can not believe that any open minded individual could walk away from this book only to attack it - it would be interesting to have a TRUTHFUL poll of Christians and religious types to see how many of them have actually read it cover to cover. I do concede however that some of the references contained therein and the general technicality of the text may be enough to "bore" people of a weaker intellectual persuasion.

A Trinity? (1/2 people found this helpful)

Interest: sort of humanist who likes more. Cave's 33 PERPLEXING PHILOSOPHY PUZZLES makes me feel better and think more. Dawkins is good and scientific, but the book does go on, OTT? Cave makes some similar points re religion and God, but in fun short tales, re Saints / Sinners, Getting to Heaven and Mysteries - as well as covering lots more: robots, dreams, free will. There's also the great CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS, GOD IS NOT GREAT, for polemical detailed erudition on religions. Dawkins is more autobiographical, Hitchens more erudite, historical: Cave more quirky, covering wider concerns. I can get a lot out of all three.

Dull (5/17 people found this helpful)

This is supposed to be controversial? Have these people never had a debate, or a late night discussion about god after one too many drinks? Did they somehow miss school, or any other form of education - religeous or otherwise.

People have been discussing this very thing for hundreds of years - thousands even.

A brief synopsis - You can't prove God exists, therefore he doesn't. A couple of arguments for he other side, rapidly put down again with the same argument, and repeat over and over again until you have filled a weighty tome (I sincerely hope R Dawkins planted lots of trees to make up for the dreadful waste of paper)
You either don't believe, or you have taken a leap of faith and you do, or you are sitting on a fence - and even if the third option is where you happen to be I honestly cannot see this book causing a revalation that pushes you over to the other side.
Since nobody is forced into religeon in this part of the world (and thank the Lord for that!) what you wish to believe is entirely up to you, you will not need this book in order to help you make a decision, go down the pub and ask the same question, you will probably get far more answers

I don't feel i have a lot to say other than zzzzzzzzzzzzz
You can't prove God exists and you can't disprove it either, what the word, oh yeah FAITH.
All i get from the Dawkins is a lot of hate and hot air. I think this book is dangerous and thoughtless. I almost get a sense of terrorism from the writter himself.
We study theory for Art school so we debate a lot and i have to say this is very pony.
As for terrorism, i don't think the root is religon, i think it's people.
Discuse

Thought provoking - (9/14 people found this helpful)

Admittedly I was a bit of an agnostic, and wasnt totally sure where i was on the issue of 'god' - this blew that out of th water tottally by sheer intelligent reasoning and analysis. This book has changed me to an athiest, adn something i realised is something that I can be proud off. This really just confirmed how I thought anyway, and that was that being religious does not make you a better human being. I do not need to do good things purely on the fear of the greatest surveilance system known (god) smiting me. I will do good because I want to help humanity, not because im told to.

The book is well written, and argues points clearly. It is well researched as Dawkins has clearly read all surrounding literature, including the bible which he picks to shreads (with great humour at times).

Richard Dawkins is clearly a man of science, and uses scientific reasoning behind many of his arguments, for example suggesting that religion has some sort of evolutionary explanation. I can honestly say ive never heard so much sense been put into one book.

But of course in the spirit of objectivity I will read the counter arguments that some authors have attempted in response Dawkins, but frankly I doubt they will be successful with me.

Also, quick point - thanks to Dawkins, I have now decided with certainty what subject to study (as I wasnt 100%) and that is Biological Sciences. This book really made biology seem all the more fascinating....

I just hope people of religious views will read the book with an open mind, and not come on here pounding out 1 star ratings just becasue they disagree.
