Hysterical, self-righteous rant (0/4 people found this helpful)

Tedious, obnoxious propaganda that does exactly what it says on the tin. If you hate the EU and want to be congratulated for it, this is the book for you. If you want insight or fresh ideas, look elsewhere.

Time our government started resisting European control (3/3 people found this helpful)

This is a scary book, even for a euro-sceptic. The scale of the European kleptocracy, arrogance, waste, self-promotion and deceit is staggering, and involves controlling/contributing to media that are positively promoting the EU. How many people know that the BBC receives funding from the EU? The whole system is completely corrupt, but nobody dares fight against it!

It makes our expense-fraud MPs seem like paragons of honesty and integrity. Perhaps this is why they have been defrauding us on such a scale, they saw the humongous frauds perpetrated by MEPs and it was pure jealousy (apparently an MEP can become a millionaire in 5 years by playing the claim game, such is the laxity of the rules). Even worse, they cant even be prosecuted for crimes either whilst in office or after leaving office. Again this is perhaps our MPs are this week trying to find centuries-old laws under which to hide from prosecution. Grrr. If proved guilty - jail them.

Everyone needs to be aware of the facts within this book. More importantly our inept government (and scared opposition parties) needs to understand the contents and start looking after the REAL interests of the people and wise up. They should try negotiating rather than rolling over (although this wasnt one of the books recommendations!)

I have read a couple of the reviews here that are less than enthusiastic. However their comments make it apparent that they either havent read the book fully or they do not understand the mathematics of the hidden costs / labour costs of bureaucracy, or the fact that later in the book there is a section that outlines the good, the bad & the ugly of Europe, which seems well-balanced to me (but I may simply be biased). The unenthusiastic reviewers are probably MPs themselves.

What I particularly like about messrs Craig & Elliott is that they write a final chapter with their big-picture recommendations. However, how do we get self-interested & spineless MPs to take action?

Please read and get your friends to read. The message needs to get out there.

Almost completely baseless... (8/23 people found this helpful)

I bought this in an attempt to understand both sides of the argument. Unfortunately it becomes somewhat apparent from reading just the first few pages that this account is not based on 'insider knowledge', but from cherry-picking inaccurate information from ill-informed people. As a previous reviewer notes, it's impossible for the EU to be costing the taxpayer 1,000 billion a year (it assumes somewhat that no other country actually contributes), as well as assuming that there are absolutely no benefits to EU membership, which even the most Eurosceptic of politicians don't agree with (i.e. benefits of free trade!).

What I find a real shame is that it gives those more sceptical about Europe a bad name. Europe has good and bad points, and if we are to get necessary reform of those parts we do not like, we should be engaging in fact and value-based discourse, not tabloid sensationalism.

If you are a Eurosceptic looking for something to anger you and 'confirm your beliefs' by all-means, buy it. If you are looking for something non-fiction, steer well clear.

Seperated from fact and reality (7/25 people found this helpful)

I bought this wanting to read a euro-skeptic view of the European Union. However i did at least expect it to have a basis in fact. The first assertion that the EU costs 1000 billion a year seems to come in to conflict with the reality of the 104 billion a year budget. If you want to convert your pro EU friends with baseless and imaginary facts and statistics buy this book. Otherwise stay well clear.

This is a book to be read by every European (14/15 people found this helpful)

Its time people woke up to the dangers of the EUSSR. People who have lived through the Russian soviet era say we are building another Soviet, just look on YouTube and you will find so. The corruption and waste in the EUSSR is criminal and should be stopped. While the MEP's feed at the trough of our tax money and say nothing, the unelected rulers gain more and more control over our life. Parliament has become nothing more than a town council with limited powers. A MUST READ.
