Reader Reviews:Rob Cowan's favourite classical discs (0/0 people found this helpful)Who knows what the top 1000 Classical recordings of all time are? What Rob Cowan knows is what recordings he likes. That's the great thing about this book. The man isn't pretending to be objective. He has his preferences and he gives them to us. What he gives us are 1000 of his favourite pieces with 1000 recommended top recordings of them. Each work gets around 80 words of description with another 80 words about his favourite recordings. He likes the big name traditional composers, he likes the music of 18th and 19th centuries, he loves older recordings - especially those of the 1930's to 1950's. He is less of a fan of 20th century music and includes very few works composed since the Second World War. He appears to distrust good recent recordings on budget labels. This book is nine years old and it is starting to show, especially in the lack of recommendations of recent excellent recordings on labels like Naxos, however, if you share Rob Cowan's tastes this may be the book for you.
