Reader Reviews:Man goes searching for something that, in the end, he realises doesn't exist (anymore). (0/0 people found this helpful)I read this book 11 years ago and found it much more enjoyable than 'The Pillars of Hercules', a similar travel book by the same author. Basically the theme of Theroux's travel writing is Man goes off searching for something that, in the end, he realises doesn't exist (anymore). Here it's a lost romantic idea of the Pacific islands - unspoilt scenery and dusky native girls. Alan Booth's travel writing does much the same thing, but I prefer Booth's writing style, and the poignant sense of beauty and sadness ('aware' in Japanese) he evokes at the loss which has occurred. 'Looking for the Lost' is a perfect realisation of this theme; it's a heart-breaking read. Reading Theroux's account of paddling around the islands in his little canoe is enjoyable and exciting, though, and his insights into the places he visits are invaluable.
