Reader Reviews:
A Note for all catholics... (9/12 people found this helpful)Don't buy this bible! It claims two things which it certainly is not.
Firstly, it is not catholic by a long shot. To use inclusive language, for example, 'humankind' rather than 'man', or 'brothers and sisters, brethren' rather than 'brothers' makes this bible uncatholic. The Catholic church still uses traditional language in its documents and teachings. Passages such as Luke 1:28 do not adhere to catholic tradition. The above example does not have the angel saying to mary "hail, full of grace" but a more modernised version, which loses the whole meaning if you ask me.
I could go on all day, in light of the fact that this is a tarted up protestant bible aimed at increasing the selling power of the NRSV. Do the publishers really think that by adding the apocryphal books, that a bible becomes automatically catholic? Think again! There are passages and passages that lose their rich catholic meaning here. Pick up the RSV Second Catholic Edition, and you can read an OT passage and really sense that the writer had a divine message of Christ's future arrival, but not here. Many passages such as John 3:16, one of the most famous passages in the bible, lose their power. To completely chop out the word 'begotten', for example, in this passage goes against catholic teaching. See the creed if you dont catch my drift.
Its shameful that some churches use this for their sermons.
Secondly, An AngliciZed edition? Come on, what is anglicised about this bible? The language throughout uses 'Z's in words like baptised. Thats american, not anglicised. Get your act together DLT Publishers, if you wish to produce a truly catholic bible. Anyone interested should see the RSV catholic bible from ignatius press for a proper catholic scripture, yes the language in it is americaniZed, but at least it does not claim otherwise. and it sticks to traditional catholic church doctinal teaching in its translation of the scripture, yet still has great readabiity. Its new testament and old testament really feel like they are bonded by the whole idea of christ's teaching but this NRSV bible gives the reader the impression they are two completely separate entities. John chapter 1 verse one shows us how Christ was with God from the start yet the NRSV OT does not give out this feeling. Amazon carries a hardcover and paperback version of the RSV 2nd Catholic Ed, both with a very nice cover. And if you think im an RSV salesman, may i also suggest the douay rheims if you really want the old-school traditional catholic bible. sorry to rant but this needed saying! Best bible translation I've ever read! (18/22 people found this helpful)With its elegant speech and accurate biblical knowledge, this bible is easily the best of modern editions. Drawing on new-found manuscripts and archaelogical evidence (such as the Dead Sea Scrolls from the Qumran Caves), intact with its in-depth maps and diagrams I would recommend it to anybody who wishes to go through with private study, as it appears to me to be the easiest to read and to understand of all the bible translations. It uses inclusive speech when dealing with the sexes (e.g using "Humankind" instead of "Man" and "Brothers and Sisters" instead of GK "Brothers") and its footnotes provide you with excellent background information of likes of where the manuscripts used for the partiular passage where taken from (Greek, Latin, Masoretic Hebrew-Abbreviations used-GK, LT, MT) and other renderings of the text are presented with the words, "other ancient authorities...etc."
All in all, I would recommend this bible to every type of reader of every age. It is a truly brilliant translation and defintely portrays the fruits of the best scholarship around. An excellent modern Bible (47/50 people found this helpful)This edition of the New Revised Standard Version strikes a balance between clarity and dignity. It is modern in the sense that it avoids excessively obscure or archaic langauge, but does not descend to embarassing paraphrase or "trendiness". It is very nicely presented and clearly printed and the typeface is relatively large. It contains excellent additions such as maps and footnotes indicating any minor discrepancies between manuscripts. Particularly welcome to Catholics and Orthodox will be the fact that the so-called "apocrypha" are placed in their proper place within the Old Testament, rather than appended as a "curiosity" since these books have been accepted as inspired by Christians since earliest times and were confirmed as such by Councils in the fourth century. The Bible is excellent for general use and is not particularly expensive. Highly recommended. Similar Products
