A must for any horror genre student! (2/2 people found this helpful)
Mark Jancovitch is a well respected academic expert in the horror genre, so I was expecting an in-depth discussion of the genre from a range of writing selected through his knowledgem which is considerable. I was not to be disappointed. Not only did I read of the influence of horror as a genre over the film industry (there was once a time where if you called a film a horror film, its chances of doing well in box office terms were smashed. Think of "The Others" and you'll understand!Horror, as with the western, has always been associated with badly made, over-acted B-movies and has had to fight hard to prove that it is a genre worth analysing), but I also found my own research into the history of horror as a genre through German Expressionist cinema, and into feminism (screaming or sexualised women)and masculinity (bravado to replace the injured masculinity [their fear])in horror, to be views that were shared by the book's contributors! A fantastic book, useful for any serious student of the genre.
