Essential text for all web service developers (1/1 people found this helpful)

Any developer who has been following the large quantity of API's appearing from Sun in the web arena has probably becoming quite confused by now. This book takes the reader through the contents of the newly restructured Java Web Services Developer Pack, which covers all the essential technologies in one package. These include the various JAX packages (JAXP, JAXR, JAXM and JAXRPC), Servlets, JSP's, tag libraries and the Tomcat web server.
The book covers each section in detail with a large number of well thought out examples included to demonstrate the practical use of the subject under discussion. Of special interest to the new user is the walk through of the getting started examples, which will help greatly to get over the inevitable teething problems.
However, nothing is perfect, and this text does have a number of problem areas:

Despite being just printed, the basis for the book is the EA2 release of the code. Unfortunately version 1.0 has now appeared and a number of minor differences have made themselves apparent. For example, the XML format for the xrpcc tool has changed and the version of Tomcat and its use has been updated.

A discussion of WSDL is missing, bar a very minor note near the end of the book. Considering the subject matter, knowledge of this standard is essential to a clear understanding of the subject. Developers will have to buy a further text to cover this area, for example, Java Web Services from O'Reilly

In conclusive, this text and the O'Reilly book read together will give the Java developer all the information they require to learn about and deploy Web Services in the Java environment.
