Wonderful book (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is a great book, part food diary, part recipe book. It has loads of ideas for meals, some are vague descriptions of what Nigel ate (but interesting nonetheless) others are more formal recipes. Although as with all Nigel Slater books he is sometimes vague about timing/temperature/quantity; but this is a good point for me. It allows you to play with the recipes and take them as inspiration rather than a straightjacket. Even if you take out all the slightly vague bits there are still loads of very good recipes (worth buying still).

As with all recipe books some of the recipes I do again and again, others I try just once. But there are some great recipes in here. Nigel's style isn't restricted to one genre of food, he has lots of european style food (Italian, French, British, etc), but some Thai and Indian type recipes as well as much more.

If you like a more formal cook book, but still like the homely style of Nigel Slater try Tender vol. 1. It has recipes in order of the main vegetable used in it (it isn't a vegetarian book by any means), so is good for seasonal cooking, and each recipe is written in a more formal style.

I love Nigel Slater's recipes, and would highly recommend this book.

The Kitchen Diaries by Nigel Slater - Used (0/0 people found this helpful)

Originally ordered a new copy for a birthday present for my wife from Amazon which was no longer available from the publisher. Decided to purchase a second-hand copy which arrived promptly and as described, without book jacket and a line through the price, otherwise in very good condition. This Nigel Slater cookery book was first published in 2005 but it does not disappoint as it has good recipes based on fresh seasonal produce. We were first made aware of this book when a friend we visited recently, cooked one of the recipes for supper. Very happy that I was still able to obtain a copy - we also have other publications by this creative and intelligent cook.

Fantastic (0/0 people found this helpful)

Great seasonal recipes. We loved the bean and tarragon soup. The mackerel is great on a summer's evening. Also the best coffee cake recipe ever.

Disappointed (0/1 people found this helpful)

I normally like Nigel Slater's recipes so was really looking foward to this book coming out, particularly as it deals with seasonal produce, something which I was interested in learning more about.

This hardback is beautifully bound and has good quality paper, but open it up and the photos are shocking. Dull and old fashioned looking. Not inspiring at all, which is a problem if you use cookbooks for inspiration!

The real test of a cookbook for me is how easy the recipes are to follow and what they taste like. The recipes I tried were easy to follow, but a couple needed quite substantial tweaking to make them taste reasonable. I have never had this problem with Nigel's other books and I am an experienced cook. Somehow, this book comes across as a little self indulgent and Nigel appears to me to be resting on the laurels of past success. I would suggest if you are interested in knowing which foods are in season at different times of the year, to look it up for free on the internet and to treat yourself to a different cookbook.

Lovely Seasonal Cooking (0/0 people found this helpful)

I like the fact that you can get ideas on what to cook with in season products. I have tried new recipes with vegetables I have never used before and with great success. My family love the food, it's no nonsense, easy to cook and full of flavour. I now flick through before I go shopping for inspiration. My only downside is that I wish I had bought the hardback edition as it is quite a thick book and difficult to keep pages open in my book holder but that doesn't reflect on the content.
