forgotten aviation pioneer (0/0 people found this helpful)

A fascinating account of the first person to fly the atlantic east to west and, apparently, one of the most promiscuous females in Kenya high society in the 1920s and 1930s- her lovers were so numerous that at times the author simply lists them. In many ways Beryl Markham comes accross as a classic example of a european living in Africa in that era; energetic, independent, brave but completely amoral, self centered and self destructive. Her atlantic flight and the subsequent book (ghost written) brought her considerable fame, especially in the US. Unfortunately - like many Kenya types - she ended up a ''poor white'' in Kenya at the end of her days, dependent on the charity of others. An excellent well researched book for anyone interested in Keyna society in the 20s and 30s and the life of a forgotten aviation pioneer.
