Reader Reviews:Disappointing (3/4 people found this helpful)I felt excited when 'The Low-Carb Cookbook' was delivered but it was shrieking 'dull' from the moment I unveiled it's bland dust jacket!!!! The layout is as clear and precise as a car manual and just as unimaginative! Cooking is such a creative activity, but this recipe book did not encourage me to even consider making a list of ingredients to purchase so that I could dash home and prepare a dish from it's contents. Something my mother once told me came to mind - "Never trust a recipe with too few ingredients....". Although this advice isn't always true in the case of McCullough's offerings I began to absolutely trust that the lack of ingredients meant a host of boring dishes. With all the wonderful things low-carb foods offer how could McCullough fail to achieve something spectacular! But she has; indeed she has! Sorry, I can tell this is a book which will sit on my bookshelf for years as I couldn't even bear to give it away to anyone. Oh Nigella Lawson - please give us something low carb to drool over! Helps a low-carb diet to fit into your life (14/14 people found this helpful)If you're looking for a good value, low-carb cookbook then I could recommend this one. It is a genuinely good cookery book, the author is a food editor and it shows - it contains recipes you would choose to use even if you were not on a low-carb program! An invaluable book to begin your new lifestyle change! (36/36 people found this helpful)Because this book starts with a good overview of the many low-carb books currently on the market, I think this should have been the first book I bought when I started my low-carb "diet". It's clearly written and answers many questions that invariably come up when you begin low-carbing. The recipes are simple, yet delicious; and obviously developed by someone who loves food and understands the protein/carb relationship fist-hand. A terrific starting point! Disappointing deserts - good otherwise (11/11 people found this helpful)This a very good book that fills a huge void in the cookbood section. The deserts, however, were disappointing in that Fran uses Splenda in most of them. Being someone who is very mistrustful of man-made additives (aspartame anyone?) I can only wonder what the long term effects are going to be for people injesting sugar which has had chlorine atoms injected into it. The book would have been better with natural ingredients like Stevia. I found the book informative and easy to read. (1/1 people found this helpful)AS a newcomer to the world of low-carb eating, I found that this book was packed full of nutritional information that I needed in order to begin a new way of eating. The recipes are straight forward and easy to follow. I have tried many of them and found that not only do they fit my eating lifestyle, but also the rest of my family who normally groan at my weight losing plans. It is a great primer for the novice and a good reference book for the long-time low carb diet.
