Reader Reviews:Love and bagpipes in rural France (1/1 people found this helpful)Although this book is very enjoyable and easy to read, the author was attempting to educate people about such novel ideas (at the time) as equality of the sexes, non-violence, folk traditions and customs, and that women do not necessarily have a natural aptitude for motherhood. However, above all it is a love story involving two couples which unfolds amidst a beautifully evoked rural ideal populated by the "good" and the "bad" and infused with the sweet sound of local pipes and the eager joy of the dance. All of these are used by the author to further her aim of educating the reader. And what's more, one can visit the same villages today - 200 years after the action - and dance in the same squares to the big Bourbonnais bagpipes.
