Reader Reviews:Very thorough, perhaps a bit tedious (3/3 people found this helpful)If you're looking for a book containing detailed descriptions of everything microphone related, then this is it. From polar response to mic technique, it's all here. I found this book a bit heavy going at times. It's not that it was difficult to understand, but reading it is kind of like being in a long lecture without a break. All of the information is there and John Eargle demonstrates his clearly encyclopedic knowledge of the subject down to the smallest detail, but at times it becomes tedious to read. From chapter one, it's packed with technical and theoretical information on all things microphone but never get any lighter. It's probably best to read this book in relatively short bursts. However, I can't fault it on its actual content, and as a reference book, I doubt that there can be a more detailed and thorough book on the topic of microphones. Not dazzling, but important (14/14 people found this helpful)There are books that take a complicated subject and dazzle the reader with exciting layouts and endless colour-photo 'do this in four steps' guides. This is not one of those books. If you can't see the use of a book that takes you into detail about different types of microphone, different circuits for connecting up microphones, different ways to place microphones and different makes and models of microphone, then this definitely isn't for you. If you immediately see the usefulness, then you will forgive the rather staid layout and uninteresting graphics. 'The microphone book' will save you time and money, even if you only ever buy one microphone to use in a home studio. If you do live sound, record on location, or are kitting out a slightly more ambitious project studio, then this book will be invaluable. It takes you far further than the 'microphone' sections of general guides to studio recording, while holding your hand significantly better than something like 'The Sound Engineer's Handbook' -- which, while authoritative, is hardly bed time reading. In the days of internet shopping, it is easy to source good microphones at good prices. It is far harder to obtain the right advice about which to buy and when to use it.
