Overlong Mary Sue (0/0 people found this helpful)

Based on good reviews and hankering for a bit of huge old school fantasy I picked this book out from the many 'trilogy part 1's' lining the shelves.

Unfortunately, in spite of its popularity. it has some huge flaws which diminish it's impact in an already crowded field. Like most fantasy over the past 40 years or so it's overlong, slow and full of characters you never meet again. Though the writer has a reasonable ear for dialogue much of the description is clunky and cliched. And, this is the biggest flaw, the main character is the most blatant 'Mary Sue' I've seen in published fiction for years. Not even 15, the boy genius survives hardship, looks like a young prince, never fails in his tasks, shows up all the older boys (and teachers) and is an arrogant prick to boot.

Now, hopefully, this is because we are supposed to see him as an unreliable narrator but I doubt the author has the subtlety to pull this off, or that his target audience would get it if he did.

All in all, disappointing and formulaic.

Heed the warnings (0/2 people found this helpful)

A number of these reviews, although glowing, refer to a number of weaknesses. It's too long [poorly edited?];first person narrative is one dimensional. Sadly, I ignored them and bought the book. Mistake. By page 80 I was wondering what was for tea; by 100 I was planning my holidays; by 100 I was nodding off. I then skip-read to 200 to see if I was going to miss anything. Er, no. It is so, so slow. Takes forever to get - well, nowhere really. Plenty of other super-long fantasy novels out there but with most, you're well into the plot early on. I don't mind waiting if I feel we're going somewhere worthwhile but I just didn't feel that here. If you like song of ice and fire or Joe Abercrombie, I doubt youd like this one. Sorry!

Brilliant (0/0 people found this helpful)

I was sent this book when I forgot to order a title from a fantasy book club, but I was soooooooo glad that I did. I completely lost track of time as I fell head first into the world of Kvothe and read solidly until I finished. I simply loved this book and cannot wait for its sequel.

Amazing, Unforgettable Story (0/0 people found this helpful)

It's rare that I read a story that makes me forget that I'm reading a book at all. The pace was perfect... I absolutely cannot wait for more.
