This book had me captivated from start to finish. I was unable to put it down and ended up reading it from cover to cover in a 2 hour stint.
Predominantly my interest in this book is what kept me so interest as it is the story of my grandfather's life in the camp. Despite this, it really is a great book, another classic from Jan der Post.
Please be aware that this is the soft back version that does not include any illustrations to accompany the relevant pieces of text. The hardback version does include these illustrations but as you may find out, that version is difficult to come by. Fortunately I have the original portraits and illustrations to look at.

A beautifully written juxtapose between the suffering of those whose lives were shattered by the two atom bombs in Japan against the crushed emaciated soldiers in POW camps across Asia. Should the bomb have been used? An alternate perspective of WWII from the Eastern front written with humanity and compassion that justifies the bomb but deplores war
