I have read Grisham's entire body of work (except for Ford County). This book, above all others, was a fantastic read. I simply could not put it down. If I was not reading it I was thinking about it. It has been years since I read it, and the plot is still engrained into my mind. I don't want to say too much about the plot, but it is fast paced and it keeps you hanging on until the very end; not a book you will want to walk away from. Grisham gives a master class in pulling a complicated story (and characters) together in exhilarating fashion. A must read for fans of legal thrillers.

I can understand why many other reviewers have given this book 3 star or less. The beginning and ending was a bit of a let down but the storyline sure make up for it. I know most people would have preferred the happy ever after ending, but in life this is never the case. All the same a great read.
Great Book Bad Ending (1/2 people found this helpful)
This is a great book and just couldnt put it down, but found the ending hugely dissapointing, I agree with some of the other reviews forget the last couple pages and the book gets 5 stars, but I can find no logical reason for ending the book that way and there was nothing in the book to lead you to think the girl would do that, I think john grisham just didnt want to end the book too happily by absolutley everything working out for patrick and in doing so spoilt the ending to the book

I love John Grisham and I never thought I'd love a book more than The Firm but this is even better. The story is so well written that I found it hard to put the book down. What I love about Grisham is that he gets right into a story in the first chapter and this has a hold on you from page 1. If you love Grisham, you'll love this. One of my favourite books now.
