helped us pick our boy's name (1/1 people found this helpful)

there are hundreds of name books on the market but we went for this one mainly because it was by penguin and had a lot of choice in it. many a sunday morning was spent flicking through it while I was pregnant listing the names we liked and weren't so keen on. in the end it did help us pick our baby's name and it gave us a lot of fun reading some of the more out there suggestions.

Fun and helpful (2/2 people found this helpful)

We purchased this when trying to pick a name for baby. We already had a conventional baby name book but were not finding any inspiration. This was a great change from normal name books as it gave some interesting comments against each name and not just the bog standard meaning. Some of the references to well known and famous people with the same name are a bit outdated but that doesn't take away stop this from being a very entertaining and informative read and eventually helped us decide on a name we both liked.

Very good (1/2 people found this helpful)

This book is great with lots of interesting names and good desciptions. Only bummer is the paper could be of better quality.

A huge variety of names but a difficult layout to follow (2/3 people found this helpful)

By far the best book for variety, quantity, description, meanings & origins of names but unfortunately the layout is that of a dictionary which makes it an un-enjoyable read. Also with male and female names not in separate sections, if you already know what sex your baby is, it will take you quite a while to get through the whole book. Overall I am glad I bought the book, however when I do pick it up to read I am quite quick to put it down again due to the un-imaginative format.
Although the title of the book is 'The Penguin Dictionary of First Names' I didn't think it would have the exact layout of a dictionary as i do not know many people who enjoy reading dictionaries.

Great present (2/3 people found this helpful)

I bought this as a Christmas present for my sister who is expecting her first baby. The book was well set out, easy to use and very interesting. We spent the whole of Christmas looking at the different meanings and origins of names.
