4/5 stars

A great holiday read (0/1 people found this helpful)

I have almost finished this book after devouring it on holiday in just a few days, and i think this is in my top 5 Wilbur Smith books. I have read about 15 and they can be quite formulaic and samey, but this one i felt was really original as it encompasses so many different characters whose actions are still having repurcussions in the present day. Something else that i really enjoyed with this one was the ambiguous actions of the main characters, so a lot of the time you dont know who you are rooting for. River God and When the Lion Feeds are still my favourites but this is up there.

Wilbur Smith (10/11 people found this helpful)

I began reading Wilbur Smith several years ago with his Egyptian series. Since then I have read and enjoyed all of his novels up to this point in the Courtney series. I found a website a few years ago that follows the timelines of all of his novels and I found it best to read them in this order. As most of you may know the books seem to start and end with the lifetimes of the characters. It saddens me to know that someday soon the characters will catch up to our present day. But that is the beauty of books. You can read them over and over again. This book captures an era which was described to me by my grandfather many years ago. His life was much different than what happens here but many of his stories reflect what Wilbur Smith describes in this book....Enjoy!!!

Wilbur Does it Again (10/13 people found this helpful)

This Wilbur Smith novel took a bit more getting into than some others. But stick with it and you'll enjoy sub-plot after sub-plot, but each with a link to the next that makes you wonder how it will all end. Suprisingly there are some very familiar characters in this book, that you would not expect to find in a Wilbur Smith book. An fantastic read!

A fast-paced emotional rollercoaster of a read. (11/15 people found this helpful)

Right from the first few pages you are engrossed in yet another Wilbur Smith classic. His attention to detail will have you unable to put the book down. Throughout the novel you will find your loyalties to the key characters constantly changing. The way Smith intertwines the various storylines, rather than confusing the overall plot, only deepens the intrigue. Wilbur Smith is a very addictive novellist.
