Reader Reviews:Absolutely cracking analysis of the Punic Wars (6/7 people found this helpful)An excellent tactical, operational and strategic analysis of the three Punic Wars, detailing in large part the career of IMHO the greatest general of all time, Hannibal, who almost managed, with limited support,to bring what was then the greatest miliatary power on earth to its knees. Liddell-Hart may be correct in his estimation of Scipio Africanus being greaer then Napoleon, but Hannibal? no way Punic Wars review (9/10 people found this helpful)I borrowed this book from a friend, I was reluctant to even start it as I am not a book lover, however I was pleasantly surprised. The book tackles a huge portion of ancient military history that would usually automatically make it dull and difficult to stick with. However not only does it teach the facts it grabs your imagination and brings each page alive. You dont need to be clued up to read this but by the time youre done youll know all you need to. A fantastic read that really comes across well, I can not emphasize the need for all ancient history enthusiasts to READ THIS BOOK. Its simple, clear and yet detailed in its facts and intelligently structured. Good overview of Punic wars and emphasis on strategy (6/6 people found this helpful)Good overview of the three Punic Wars, especially the first and third which I didn't know much about although like everyone interested in military history I knew a little bit about the 2nd Punic War with Hannibal, elephants, Cannae etc. Liked the emphasis on strategy and implications, although attempts to link this to a modern era vis-a-vis USSR and Gorbachev will unfortanately "date" the book. Has inspired me to find out more. Better than Liddell-Hart (7/7 people found this helpful)This book covers a lot of the same ground as Liddell-Harts book "Scipio Africanus" although it includes a lot of stuff from before he became the dominant general in the war which isnt included in LH's book. I enjoyed LH's book but it was nice to read what seems a more dispassionate analysis as I sometimes got the impression that LH's book was a bit hagiographic. Both books are worth reading but this is the better (in my opinion). Excellent history of ancient battles (8/9 people found this helpful)I have decided to review this book as I think it deserves five stars. Sadly enough, I read this after over-dosing on "Gladiator" and wanting to find out more about the Roman way of war. The narrative is very strong and the final analysis excellent. This work led me to the original works of Polybius and Livy, which are also excellent. This book is the business. Buy it.
