Rubbish (0/1 people found this helpful)

Smith has let himself down badly with this nonsense. I wonder if he is showing his age?

A bit different (0/0 people found this helpful)

I have read almost all of Wilbur Smith's novels and this one is a bit different. It is fair to say that there were some strange things going on in the days of Ancient Egypt but I feel this story is stretching it a bit too far. However, as long as you keep an open mind and don't try to pull holes in the story it is a very good and enjoyable read.

A little different from Smith, but that does not make it bad. (0/0 people found this helpful)

The Quest is a bit of a deviation from Smith. Where in previous books there is a sense of gritty realism in this one, he delves in to the supernatural. From the reviews this has been a bit of a turn-off for some Smith fans. I can see why he might want to try something slightly different. I'm a big fan of Smith's but even I can see that many of his books are a little formulaic. This is slightly different, but it still maintains much of the realism that his books are acclaimed for.

Overall, I would recommend it. It's a good read, the story is fast paced with some twists (but not too many). This may not be his finest work, but I certainly enjoyed it,

I couldn't put it down....... (2/3 people found this helpful)

I can't understand why folks didn't like this book. I was on the edge of my seat all the way through it. I can only conclude that the other reviewers either didn't read the whole book, or didn't understand what Wilbur Smith was trying to convey in his story.

Taita, the old sage, had a chance to turn back the clock and rekindle his love for Lostris, whom he befriended way back in this series. That was it, clear and simple. No paedophilia (as some have written - see other reviews of alternative edition of this book on amazon). He does, in his inimitable way, go into details sometimes, which might offend some readers. But it was an innocent means of expression. Nothing sinister.

Goodness, Mr Smith has written 30 books so far. Surely, it is his right to fully express himself in this his 30th book (to my knowledge). It's a bit like Pink Floyd writing and producing mainframe music (Dark Side of the Moon, Wish you were here), and then going a bit hay wire in Animals, for example.

If you are open minded, don't miss this fantastic story, just because of the other reviews.

I highly recommend it.

Copied from 'She' (0/0 people found this helpful)

A very disapointing read - I spent most of the time comparing the book with 'She' which was just so similar. Some of the scenes were just too morbid without the need to be. Such a shame that he has to drag this story line on when it was fine after The Seventh Scroll which was wonderful but also nothing like the early books. Think maybe its time to hang your pen up Mr Smith and enjoy your retirement.
