Good format, shame about the accuracy.... (0/0 people found this helpful)

This map is deficient in the one thing that good maps MUST have, ie accuracy. We live in Crete for part of the year and would love an accurate road map for minor roads off the beaten track, but comparison of this map with our first hand knowledge of several of the more remote corners of the island leaves us very unimpressed. The cartography seems to have been copied from a variety of other equally inaccurate versions of the island's road network - I am surprised that The Rough Guide is prepared to put its name to this publication without an attempt to verify the existence or otherwise and accuracy of roads on the ground.

Good quality paper - poor quality mapping (0/0 people found this helpful)

If you are thinking of buying this map don't it will get you lost.
I have bought a number of Rough Guides and Rough Guide maps and they have all been really useful and provided excellent insight into the places I've visited. Having decided to holiday in Crete I bought the Rough Guide and the Rough Guide map. The Rough guide was excellent but the map was hopeless. There is not much detail and some of the detail there is, is wrong. We drove from Hiraklion to Elounda along the main road, shown on the map as continuous, but when we got as far as Maliia the road ended and we could see that it hadn't been constructed for several miles eastwards. This meant a diversion through Malia which wasn't a pleasant experience. The converse was also true. We drove from Arkalohon with the intent of turning north towards Kastelli but found we were on a road without turn offs and ended up near Ano Viannos.

The Rough Guide Map Crete (1/1 people found this helpful)

after several trips to Crete and using a lot of maps we found that the Rough Guide Map Crete is the best we used before.

Detailed enough, showing most places of interest, picturesque views locations, distance between points information etc, good made quality, easy to read makes this map a real must while travelling Crete island

Going out of date (15/16 people found this helpful)

We bought this map for a holiday on Crete in early 2008 and we used a hire car to get around the island. We are usually good at using maps to find our way but with this one we wasted a lot of time on wrong turnings.

The statement in the synopsis that "every road is included" is far from true. It is just not anything like that detailed. To add to the difficulty, there are a lot of major road developments underway on Crete and the map has become badly out-of-date. A good map is needed because of the lack of signposting especially in towns and villages. The coastal resorts have also seen numerous route changes and little seems to correspond to what is on the map. Sometimes a large hotel would be found where the map indicated a road going through. We were left wondering just how long ago those roads were updated on this map.

Accurate and tough (12/12 people found this helpful)

I took a punt on the above reviews and purchased this map for two weeks cycling around the western part of the island. This map was superb. It handled getting wet, being folded in to strange and wonderous shapes to fit panniers, handlebar bags and cafe discussions with old men. In terms of accuracy it was very good although there was the odd location that needed to be revised, eg. the traditional settlement of Milia. It seemed to have all the rough old public farm tracks that are rather hard work on a laiden bike, and was accurate with the roads you can actually travel on without getting a puncture several times a day. Furthermore it retained good accuracy for the walking trails. The map has relatively good contour lines (which you should definitely be analysing if you're not in a car).

Overall I would certainly purchase another of these maps.
