i have used many rough guides before and have all ways been impressed but for this guode this was not the case.
the guide many fociuses on town and cities and the acomodation, night life and urban experiances of the palce. it fails to give you an idea of what there is out side the cities activity and acomodation wise.
if you city hopping then it will suit you well but if you want to get out there and expericane the counrt for real then other guides do it better.

We are using this book to follow our son's South American adventure. We use Rough Guides a lot. This one gives us a pretty good idea of the places he's going to, and some of the hazards that he's likely to encounter. It's so irritating that it hasn't been properly proof-read. Doesn't anyone in the production process know that "its" only needs an apostrophe when it's a contraction of "it is"? There are lots of spelling mistakes as well - but "it's" comes up on every page.

I bought this Rough Guide to plan my 4 month backpacking trip around S.America. I mainly chose it over the Lonely Planet as it was recently published so the prices and best places to visit/stay are more up-to-date (the LP is a few years old now). I've relied on it a lot for planning costs for trips and general living/travelling so I'm glad I got this one. I like the fact it gives advice about general matters (like money, crime, things to do/avoid) where relevant. I'm sure LP and RG are very similar for content but this is better for more recent information.
This is great for me as I'm visiting 8 countries and I don't want to have to carry 8 travel books, but if you're only going to a couple of countries you may want to consider buying individual books for more detail. Nevertheless, this is great for an overview of everywhere you'd probably want to go visit, costs and how to get there plus a bit of history/culture of the countries.

You know what you are going to get with the rough guide, so I'm sure it'll be ok although I haven't actually gone to South America and tested the rough guide gospel.

This book has all the basic info you need to get your adventure to south america going.
Full of useful facts and hints & tips, it sums up each country in terms of accommodation, food, place of interest and even details useful website such as for organised tours and airlines.
Wow, what a spectacular read!
