Well thought out reference material (2/2 people found this helpful)

This book takes a snapshot look at seventy of the greatest, most famous battles of all time. The work is drawn together well by Jeremy Black, calling upon a plethora of highly qualified authors and contributors to cover Cannae to Iraq.

Each sections covers a single battle in two to three pages. There are contemporary pictures, battle plan graphics and in-depth detail relating to the forces in play on each side of the conflict. I particularly liked the fact that some of the socio-political history is covered prior to the detail of the battle itself. To complete the picture, the impact of the conflict on history is also discussed at the end of each section.

My only small gripe is that the battle plan graphics seem to become less and less detailed as the book progresses. This is perhaps a result of more and more complex battles, but I can't help feeling that some more consistent emphasis could have been placed on the graphical display of troop movements throughout the book.

Having said that, I wouldn't let it put you off buying a copy. Seventy particularly amazing battles are outlined here and, while this by no means provides as in-depth a history as some will be looking for, it certainly presents more detail than I anticipated in the book of this size. Furthermore, it is reasonably well thought through and well edited.

In particular this is a fascinating view of how warcraft has progressed since the days of Hannibal and Alexander through to the Battle of Britain and beyond.

It is worth reading and interesting but not always presented that well I thought.
