Editorial Review:In Nicholas Evans' The Smoke Jumper New York native Julia Bishop has no warning that spending the summer counselling troubled teens in Montana will change her life forever. Happily in love with smokejumper and musician Ed Tully, she looks forward to spending the summer weekends with him in Missoula and is stunned and disturbed by the instant connection she feels to his best friend, Connor Ford. Connor, a Montana rancher and smokejumper, loves fighting fires almost as much as he loves photography, and before the summer has barely started, he loves Julia Bishop just as deeply. The bond between the three is strong but the work of a smokejumper is fraught with danger and the trio soon face death by fire. Survival changes their lives forever and places them on paths that divide Julia, Ed and Connor just as surely as their individual journeys bind them irrevocably together. The Smoke Jumper is a tale of loyalty and guilt, honour and selfless love, and the human cost of choices made. --Lois Faye Dyer, Amazon.com Reader Reviews:Beautiful! (0/0 people found this helpful)Admittedly, this follows the same format as its prequels but hey - if it ain't broke don't fix it!
Hash rehased (2/9 people found this helpful)No heart and no soul. Sort of a novel by numbers. I read and enjoyed the Horse Whisperer and The Loop was ok but this is pretty bad writing. It's a formulaic skimmed milk of a read. No depth to the characters, no real point to the story unless it's quiet stiff upper lip, war is hell and reporters and photographers go there to forget their own awful lives. I don't mind a good popular read sometimes it's a relief but this is pap. The Smoke Jumper (2/5 people found this helpful)Although I did not think that this book was as good as 'The Horse Whisperer', I loved the way that it was centred around the unusual pursuit of smoke-jumping. However, I did find the love triangle a little too stereotypical and i think that this spoilt what could have been an outstanding book. In some parts of the book, especially at the end, I found that the plot was very easy to predict wheras at other times I had no idea what was about to happen and some things came as a real shock. The description was excellent, as Evans' always is and the storyline about Skye was fantastic. I occasionally found the time span in the book confusing, but on the whole it is very good. heart warming and in a way beautiful (4/6 people found this helpful)Having just finished the book, i came on amazon to check out what other readers thought. The first review i think doesnt do 'The Smoke Jumper' justice, as to me this is the best book i have read in a while. I was so immersed in the characters that i began to feel as if i was living through them. I loved the way that book all gels together and all the characters join up in some way or another. I cried many times during the book and as i could relate to one of the characters i thought the way Evans portrayed the character in question was fantastic. I liked the way there were three parts to the book. At the end of the first i was crying. Mr Evans uses a very good of making the reader think one thing but the outcome is completly different- this kept me in suspence throughout the book. Also in the middle of part three i was crying, and it takes alot for me to cry ill let you no. I was put off the cover of the book thinking it was (ashamed to say now)a dull read, but my friend made me read it. Overall this book is a MUST buy for those readers who want to feel moved, touched and warmed by this book. I love it! Fantastic (4/6 people found this helpful)I last read this book a couple of years ago and I remember not being able to put it down !! I laughed and cried with the characters... Amazingly written and extremely touching... I had to go out and buy it just so I could read it over and over again !
